This past summer, 17 students from across Afeka’s programs participated along with the “Osim Shechuna - Building a Cohesive Society” organization to construct a community center in Petah Tikva. The students, members of Afeka’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), chose to contribute their engineering skills to a project aimed at creating an inclusive communal space for at-risk youth to meet with social workers.
The construction included building a stable walking surface where children and teenagers could comfortably gather, marking accessible paths decorated with vegetation, and assembling a seating area entirely from reused materials like tires, nets, and concrete.
As a leading institution for training engineers, Afeka believes engineering has the power to transform lives. Exposing socioeconomically and geographically peripheral youth to engineering and technology is a core part of Afeka’s mission. Throughout the day, students recounted meaningful conversations with curious children who expressed interest in various engineering disciplines and future career opportunities.
Afeka takes pride in students who dedicate their time and knowledge to bettering society and making it more progressive and accessible for all. The club’s activities in Israel and worldwide are an inspiration that brings great honor to Afeka.
Gal Hanan, Mechanical Engineering graduate and EWB-Afeka Chapter President: “EWB-Afeka members believe impactful community development requires a combination of expertise, guidance, and collaborative effort. We feel a responsibility to positively influence beyond the classroom. As with every project, we paid close attention to details from defining goals to construction itself. I want to deeply appreciate our experienced members and enthusiastic newcomers who wholeheartedly embraced this project, proving new engineers taking responsibility for community wellbeing and the unifying, empowering spirit that defines EWB-Afeka.”
